Bonsai

This is my piece for our "The Writing is on the Wall" exchange. I printed an image of one of my bonsai paintings on fabric through Spoonflower. The image is about 4" x 6". I gave the image a white corduroy border, and stitched lace around the image to edge it further. Next I cut out some letters from printed fabric to spell "bonsai" and stitched these letters to white corduroy. The letters are raw edge.

These two pieces were put on a printed blue denim fabric that I used for my background. I thread painted some foliage shapes to the background and darkened the shapes using Tsukineko inks. I also stitched the bonsai shape a bit, and added some thread painting to the foliage.

Writing on the Wall Quilt - "Weather Forecast "

It's winter and, sure enough, it is "written on the wall" that inclement
weather will follow. The machine appliquéd bird was originally thread
painted in brown and beige shades, but because it looked dull on the quilt
background, I overpainted it with blues and then applied glitter glue on the
feathers to make it shimmer, as if snow had fallen on its wings. I
stenciled the words from hand cut card stock*, free motion stitched around
each letter and then filled in the letters with glitter glue. I quilted the
piece with continuous freemotion needlework to give it an overall look of
falling snowflakes. To emphasize a snow element a faux pearl bead was
stitched into the intersecting lines of each snowflake. To achieve a
binding that blended with the quilt's hand painted background, I used
thinned down yellow and blue Setacolor fabric paints, scrunched the fabric
while wet, and set it in the sun to do it's "thing".

* Note about making long lasting card stock stencils: A long time ago I
learned to apply linseed oil to hand cut cardstock to make it durable, but I
didn't have any linseed oil on hand. Instead, I applied 3 coats of
polyurethane after I cut out the letters and it worked famously well. The
stencils that were used on this quilt will now stand up to repeated use
without destroying the card stock.

Linda recently introduced me to Leah Day's Blog and the Free Motion Quilting Project. WOW what a great Blog! I want to share some of Linda's comments and photos as she has worked through Leah's designs.

"I believe that Leah uses 6"x 6" sandwiches and that is what I used on attached; however, I liked the finished products so much that I wish they had been 12"+ x 12"+, so you might consider working on a size that, if it turns out to be something you like, you can bind it and use it as a finished work. I started each of the ones that are pictured using one of Leah's designs and then I took off on my own. When the stitching was done, I revisited them and filled in color with Tsukeneko (sp?) inks and gave them titles that I thought represented a feeling they evoked--at least for me. I actually ended up mounting each of these on stretched, artist canvases that I painted first.

Not too long ago, a visitor to my place wanted to see some of the things I've been working on, and I was dumbfounded when she begged to have a long, narrow "sandwich" that was sitting by my machine and purely for auditioning stitches, threads, tension and quilting designs. She said that she wanted to make a sofa pillow out of it, but she didn't know how to sew. I whipped up a button backed sham type thing for her and she was absolutely thrilled and so excited that she featured it in her decor at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Go know! To me it was mishmash. October Trade 2011 "Music"

My Music Postcard is titled "Cha Cha Cha".

The first idea came to me was movement, which means dancing. I didn't want to make a literal interpretation so, I thought of manipulating fabric to give the feeling of movement. I've seen art quilts that have wavy pleats and thought that they would be fun to try. First I painted free form stripes on pfd fabric but the painted fabric was too stiff to manipulate and sew. Then I decided to use some bright stripe fabric I had in my stash. It was easier to work with. I hope it conveys the feeling of movement.

Excitement is the name of today! Mia's "Cha Cha Cha" postcard was in the mailbox. The choice of colors, the manipulation of fabric and the novel stitching lines truly make me want to dance and sing. I love, love, love it! This is a piece that would stand on its own as a larger, even huge, work. Mia, you outdid yourself. Muchisimas gracias from Linda

What is an earworm? It is the song that keeps playing in your head over and over again. Lately mine has been "Blues for Baby and Me" by Elton John. This postcard is my take on that theme. I painted the image with Tsukineko Inks, did some thread painting, and adhered decorative papers to it. The edge is just a fun silly yarn. What's your earworm?

"The Sprit Soars to Music"…When I work in my studio, I often play music which frees my mind from the mundane bonds of everyday living and lets me rejoice in the gift of creative time. I have rarely used pinks in my artwork but a lullaby led the paint brush to pinks and golds and greens and blues and whites and thoughts of a baby's dream world. I drew and cut stencils for the bird, treble clef and star shapes and stamped little circles with a bottle cap lid and the edges are finished with a roping of twisted yarns. After the postcard was finished, I added a touch of glitter sparkle to further light up the sky.

This is my August Serendipity trade. I made a cityscape because they are full of geometric shapes. I used plaid in some buildings to represent the windows, and lace/trims as windows in other areas.

Making this was great fun in surface design. The background was printed using the ends of two glued together small wooden blocks from an eency weency miniature house I made for another project. I then cut stencils from card stock and used them for filling in the geometric shapes with fabric paint. Because it seems that geometry underlies all things, I strove to achieve a transparent, ghost effect for the cluster of shapes. Finally, quilting was done around each geometric shape and each stamped background shape.

June Trade Theme: Flower

From Linda:

This postcard was great fun to make. It is a takeoff on a silk painting project that a few of us explored a few weeks ago. I used liquid gutta to outline the flower on white PFD fabric and then filled in the spaces with Setacolor fabric paints. The gutta lines did not highlight the floral shape to my liking so I satin stitched around the petals and then thread painted each petal.

Yes, Tree Waratah is the correct phrase used.The Alloxylon Flammeum tree and the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo are both found in the Queensland rain forests of Australia.Whole cloth quilt painted w/Jacquard liquid dyes on 8 mm habotai silk using a gutta resist technique.

Hi everyone, Yesterday I was the lucky recipient of Cynthia's "Fragrant Flowers" postcard. It is so beautifully done that I really can't describe it adequately. I don't know if Cynthia fussy cut fabric or painted on fabric, but the use of light/dark colors gives it such a strong 3 dimensional effect that it looks like the flowers are trapunto'd from a distance. They just pop off the card and it looks like the background glows around the flowers. I'm not exaggerating! The stitching on this piece looks absolutely perfect too. I feel so lucky to have it. It is decorating my mantel so I can see it all day long. Thank you Cynthia! Eileen

Today the postman was acting like Santa in June. I received an absolutely magnificent hibiscus from Eileen. I can hardly wait for Eileen's flower to appear on the blog so that everyone can appreciate it. A beautiful quilted leaf pattern atop a seafoam green background makes me feel as if the elegant hibiscus is leaning over a cool pool of water on a warm summer afternoon. I love it, Eileen. I stepped slightly outside the art quilt medium with this postcard. I did use fabric but painted gesso on top to turn it into a canvas then painted with acrylic paint. Each flower and the leaf is attached to the quilted postcard using thread and a bead.

From Mia: "Glow"
I took the picture outside with a white background which successfully avoided glare back from the shiny surface. The lesson I learned is that I need to more practice taking pictures & free motion quilting.

From Linda: "Lighting The Way"

During our last big rain storm, our entire area lost power for over 3 hours and candles were a saving grace in the pitch black night hours, especially when I had to use one to make enough light to even find a flashlight. When the "Light" theme was chosen, I couldn't get my humble friend, the candle, out of my mind and, thus, "Lighting the Way" developed. The background fabric is from a swath of Setacolor treated fabric. From that point forward I just started freehand "drawing" with the sewing machine. With the exception of the gray thread, all the other threadwork was accomplished with Floriano rayon threads and Superior silver metalic thread. Pinkish bugle beads and silvertone round beads were added to make the candle seem as if it is giving off real light with little "pops" that a candle sometimes makes when it is burning. For the backing I designed a postcard template and printed it onto commercial fabric that is prepared for inkjet printing. To add a more personal touch I wrote a little message in hand with a Staedtler pigment marker.

This postcard quilt was made using oil paint sticks to "negatively paint" around feather templates. The original fabric was the black and white print. After quilting I added beads across the feathers.

From Cynthia: "Sun Shade in Style"

My inspiration for this theme is the warm hot sunlight which I find invigorating. Nevertheless, I enjoy protection from the sunlight and I enjoy wearing hats to create my own shade. This postcard uses some hand-dyed fabric, batiks, satin stitch fusible applique, machine quilting, thread painting for the lips, crystals, beads, and flowers. I am very pleased with the satin stitch finished edge treatment. I use a 100% long staple Valdani cotton thread, 35 weight and 3 ply. It gives great coverage. To implement the technique, I stitch around the postcard with a zig-zag, then I go over the zig-zag with a close satin stitch which eliminates all thread whiskers. I used a pellon single-sided ultra firm stabilizer instead of batting and I really liked the results for this size work. Thank you Mary Beth for sharing your tip about the stabilizer.

I used a piece of brown fabric I had discharged with Clorox Bowl Cleaner, practiced two needle stitching techniques with straight and zig zag stitches, then I used white ink to highlight some light spots and white ribbon to 'bind'. Way fun - I want to go this again.

Wow! I just received Teresa's "Lightning Bug" postcard. It's absolutely
wonderful. Wait until you all see it posted. The background colors are
spectacular, like the lush green of a warm summer's eve and the bugs...the
bugs! Teresa's stitching makes them come alive as if they are sitting atop
the postcard itself. I love it! Thank you Teresa. The postcard is better
than fantastic. It's out of this world. My cousin in Victoria, B.C., and I
were speaking via Skype about the lightning bugs she used to capture in a
jar when she lived in Colorado. I've never seen a real lightning bug, and
felt that I had missed out on this fabled bug of childhood. Thanks to
Teresa, I now I have several of these wonderful little critters to light up
the rest of my life.

While cruising around some of my email links I found one to the ArtTrader magazine. This is a magazine that deals with ATC's, and all trade-able items. Something that fits into what we are doing. Thought you might like to explore what they have to offer. I added the link to our fun page also.

Also, if you like to make purses or bags check out Linda Matthews site. She has wonderful items that are all free e-patterns. There is an area that has 160 purse/bag patterns! Check out her site. She also has some great classes and I have taken some in the past.

I got this email recently and I am just a guilty as some of the others so......I will do better next exchange. AND I do happen to know it is a lot less expensive. So thank you Joanell for the little elbow reminder!

"I thought this was a postcard exchange. Today I received my second one packed safely in an envelope. How about prompting everyone to put a first class stamp on to their entry and popping it into the mail. The non-decorated side needs to be stamp-able. I propose that people sew their contribution onto card stock. Sew or zig zag the edges. Make it look like a postcard - address goes on the right, greeting on the left and a stamp. To my knowledge, in all the years I have been doing mail art I have never lost a postcard. A suggestion. Most of the fun is getting it in the mail - dazzle your post-person."

I promise that the next one I send out will have a stamp on it.

Added a New Link

I have added a new link to a site for a gallery. The link is actually for the products that this gallery owner offers.

I have purchased the book "Starving" to Successful | The Fine Artist's Guide to Getting into Galleries and selling More Art". It is geared more to the fine art people but it has great information that we can use in our pursuits if we wish to get into a gallery situation or present a more professional attitude in our work.

I am also going to purchase the software for tracking a customer base. It is called "Art Tracker". It is customizable so you can remove the references to oils, acrylics, etc and add your own types and descriptions such as silk, cotton, collage, etc. Check out the link and go through the demo screens for how versatile this program is. I originally was going to try to create my own tracking system but this does exactly what I want and I don't have to spend hours and hours working on that when I could be in the studio.

I have talked to them via email and they are very responsive and helpful.

If any one is thinking or is already selling to galleries or private collectors, Art Tracker is a great program to use, and the book gives you all the in's and out's from the gallery perspective. It is very helpful to know what they are looking for in the way of presented pieces and professionalism. This will put you miles ahead when you approach a gallery for representation or even a private client.

Cross Currents

I got my Water theme quilt done! I call it "Cross Currents". I used a base of fabric, hand colored lace, strings and yarns, organza and colored tinsel. All this was done in 2 layers so that you get the feeling of looking through the water. Some of the layers were heat distressed to open them to the surface.

I received in the mail 2 days ago the little quilt-let from Teresa! It is way too cute. I love the little "bumpy bits" in the stitching. Really adds texture to the surface and ties in the binding to the center of the quilt. Something you really cannot see in the photo.

Interesting Site For Us

O.K. Here is the deal. I am sitting at home having a really bad day. I have a project I am behind on because I was sick all last week. My ink jet printer I need for the project just ran out of ink (ALL the cartridges - not just one). David is now in the middle of the nasty mung so I am taking care of him. I do have the home "jobs" done but I really need to shop for food. I think I may be relapsing because my neck is aching.

Now here comes the high point of my day:
I sent some info to my sister and from there she found this other site and sent the link information back to me.

JUST A SMALL TASTE

At this moment in time, I am in a place with no direction or motivation or pressing deadlines. So - Wednesday I worked on LEAVES. I made stamps with sticky craft foam and discarded CD dividers I found at a reuse store. I dug out my silk screens with leaves and I drew leaves with paint. And I used the word PEACE on each piece of fabric. Peace was my word for last year and I figure it cannot hurt to do it again.

This doesn't tell you a lot but it does read - leaf.

My Snippet

I thought that I would publish a snippet of my January quiltlet so everyone could get an idea of what I was talking about in the email I sent. This is about a 1 inch area of the quilt.

I used cotton, silks, silk fibers and other materials to create my piece. I think this is the piece I will use for the challenge but if I come up with something else.... I have lots of ideas.

Do you think we should start a blog so all this information can be viewed all in one place? That way we don't have to try to save to folders or scan our emails.
Everyone blogs, right? Blogspot I think is the easiest and you can load lots of pictures and even videos for free. Wordpress has limitations on videos unless you pay.

If someone has an idea or technique they would like to share or something that would be used on a future project then the video could be posted (or step by step photos) and we could all benefit from it. Not clog up our email boxes and everyone would have access at any time.

Let me know what you think. I could set it up or someone else could.

I wish you all a very Happy New Year with lots of Creative Time!

I’ve been painting leaves using a freezer paper stencil and white acrylic paint. I find I have to apply 2 or 3 coats to cover my pieced background to an extent that the background is muted enough to show the leaf shape yet let the background reflect through the paint. It’s fun – now I’m tossing around ideas of how to enhance the leaves at this point – stitching, fabric markers, ink pencils – maybe all of these…

It would be great to hear tips / ideas from you all. Please email the group when you have time

This sounds great, Deborah. I think mailing the projects might be more reliable than assuming everyone can attend every QOTW meeting. But by using the mail we won't be able to see all the finished pieces so how about a photo collection, too. If everyone contributes a digital photo of their completed piece we can all see what each of us accomplished. I'd be happy to collect and distribute photos if it seems like a good idea and no one else wants to do it.

Let’s start with "Leaves" as our first theme for a “postcard” of 5” X 7” due February.

Hummmm ? – shall we draw names in a rotating basis from our alpha list noted above then mail our piece to each other? This way we won’t be dependent upon a meeting place. Suggestions?

Other than that we might draw names and trade after a QOTW meeting – and in that case it might be March for the trade – but March sounds like a long time. Need your input on this!

For those of us who want to make a fabric book from our trade pieces I think we can add a “book binding” piece thus making it a little wider ~ 6” to compile. Ideas or comments on this?

Hi all,

I like doing the name drawing. I don't want to have to make 6 or more of everything.

I would vote for something like a 5"x7" size. February sounds good. For our first theme I suggest " leaves " because it is easy to interpret and it will help to have an easy first theme to get us started. But, I am open to other ideas.
